MATTHEW V. SOFFER is the Senior Rabbi at Judea Reform Congregation in Durham, NC (since 2019). He and his family–wife Nicole and three children, Caleb, Carmel, and Ronan–are thrilled to be part of the Judea Reform Community.
Prior to arriving at Judea Reform, Rabbi Soffer served as Senior Rabbinic Associate at Temple Israel of Boston, where he was the Director of the Riverway Project (an initiative that engaged thousands of young adults in Jewish life) and “Tikkun Central,” the congregation’s nationally recognized social justice program. Rabbi Soffer has served as Clergy Council Chair of the Jewish Alliance for Law & Social Action (JALSA) and sat on the advisory council of the Pluralism Project at Harvard University. Trained in congregation-based community organizing, he now serves as a leader in the IAF affiliate DurhamCAN, the JStreet Rabbinic Council, and the Board of Jewish for Good in Durham.
As a leader in Jewish engagement work, Rabbi Soffer has been featured in Newsweek’s “10 Rabbi’s to Watch,” the Religious Action Center’s “50 Faces of Justice,” the North American Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) President’s Award, and by MyJewishLearning.com as “America’s Real Top Rabbi” in 2012. Rabbi Soffer was ordained by HUC-JIR, where he earned an M.A. in Hebrew Literature and served as a Tisch Rabbinical Fellow. Rabbi Soffer’s work also includes music composition, performance, and comedy.
His greatest pride and joy in life is his family. They live in Durham, NC, where he attends as many Durham Bulls games as possible. His secondary faith tradition is Philadelphia sports.
